MADRID, Spain — A community outreach initiative in Madrid has brought together Scientology volunteers, Youth for Human Rights and Fundación MEJORA to raise awareness of fundamental freedoms.
Through direct conversations with pedestrians and the distribution of educational leaflets, participants introduced the public to the principles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The activity coincided with public discussions in Spain's capital about housing, freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. The educational campaign was independent of the housing demonstrations.
The volunteers used resources from internationally established human rights education programmes supported by Scientology. The information covers everyday rights relating to dignity, personal freedom, education and social protection.
Article 25 of the Universal Declaration addresses an adequate standard of living, including housing, while Article 26 emphasises education that strengthens respect for human rights.
According to Ivan Arjona, who represents Scientology before the EU, OSCE, news eu settlement scheme Council of Europe and United Nations, human rights education supports civic responsibility and mutual respect.
Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard advocated wider awareness of the Universal Declaration, an approach subsequently reflected in the Church's educational outreach.
The outreach brought internationally recognised human rights principles into everyday conversations in the Spanish capital.
Additional background appears in the Madrid Scientology volunteers' human rights education coverage.
